About us

The ULB Delegation to International Model NATO 2018 is composed of highly motivated students, passionate about politics and eager to share their excitement in order to give and make the best of this opportunity. Our diversity offers the chance to enhance this project as a fundamental step before finishing our studies and jumping into our future careers. We truly believe that experiencing this real-life training and negotiation in Washington DC is the best way to get as close as possible to what fascinates us the most: the diplomatic world. We want to be among those being able to come up with solutions when others only see problems.

What is IM NATO?

The International Model NATO is a simulation of the proceedings of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, augmented by pre-conference study and briefings at embassies of NATO Member States.

More than thirty universities from both sides of the Atlantic are invited to participate and to represent a Member State of NATO and/or of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC). Moreover, students also grapple with a contemporary crisis to be revealed at the Model. The experience provides a unique opportunity for university and college students to study the role, structure and activities of NATO, as well as the military, political-security, economic, and social issues facing the Alliance.

The primary goal of each delegation is to represent a country in the most realistic and effective way possible. The task of each committee is to reach consensus on its particular agenda topics and to prepare draft language for the communiqué to be passed by the North Atlantic Council (NAC) – the primary decision-making body for NATO.

The 33th Annual International Model NATO Conference is scheduled for xx to xx February 2018 in Washington, D.C.

The ULB at IM NATO

The Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is about to participate in the International Model NATO Conference for the eight year consecutively. During the past years, the ULB delegations impressed with extraordinarily successful performances and could thereby not only obtain numerous awards (“Honourable mention”) but also assure further invitations to the well-respected simulation conference in the following years. In this regard, the ULB delegation has always been promoting and contributing to the international reputation of the ULB and European universities in general. In fact, the ULB delegation constitutes, since the beginning of its attendance, one of the few European participants in the annual conference in Washington D.C.

In order to prolong these successful performances, this year’s ULB delegation has got selected through a recruiting process consisting of three steps (CV and motivation letter, personal interviews, simulation exercise). During the IM NATO 2018 Conference, our delegation – consisting of 7 students of European Studies, Political Science, International Relations and Public Law (for more detailed information) – is going to represent the Kingdom of Belgium.
